Our history in France

Our Bank’s history began in France and has many roots there. It has been the inheritor of French Companies of Excellence since the founding of the Compagnie Universelle du Canal Maritime de Suez in 1858 and the Banque de l’Indochine in 1875.

The next part of the story confirmed our attachment to France. In 1926, one of our ancestors, Banque Meyer, a boutique wealth management firm, was founded there. It was renamed Banque de Gestion Privée (BGP) in 1968, before going on to join Crédit Agricole group in 1991.

Other foundations were laid in 1959 with the creation of Banque de Suez after the nationalisation of the Suez Canal, and in 1975, when Banque Indosuez was born of the merger of Banque de l’Indochine and Banque de Suez et de l’Union des Mines.

After Banque Indosuez joined Crédit Agricole group in 1996, the gradual amalgamation of specialised teams led to the creation of the global Wealth Management business, which is now Indosuez Wealth Management.

In France, we have notably achieved:

• in 1999, the merger of the wealth management activities of Banque Indosuez and BGP, leading to the creation of Banque de Gestion Privée Indosuez (BGPI);
• in 2003, the merger of BGPI and asset management specialist Crédit Agricole Indosuez Cheuvreux Gestions;
• in 2021, the creation of a France Business Unit bringing together all of CA Indosuez's client-related activities in France.

Since 2011, all of the Crédit Agricole group's Wealth Management activities worldwide have been managed from France.
